The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) is a leading non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting critical habitat for wildlife, fish, and plants in BC. Since 1971, we have secured over 180,000 acres of ecologically significant land. In order to help care for the land, NTBC and our partners fund an annual conservation field crew program that carries out land management activities on conservation areas throughout the province, including the Kootenay region.

NTBC is seeking a Seasonal Conservation Field Technician who will assist in a variety of land management activities on nearly 30 conservation area complexes within the Kootenay region. You will work on both NTBC and BC Provincial conservation areas to help achieve shared conservation objectives. You will report to the Kootenay Field Operations Coordinator, and work as a coordinated team to complete the annual work plan.

This is a seasonal contract position based in Cranbrook, B.C.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspections of conservation areas which may include wildlife and habitat inventory, GPS and mapping functions (e.g. ArcGIS Field Maps), reporting of land management issues and/or prohibited activities, and inventory of signage and other infrastructure.
  • Assessment and repair of boundary fence lines to help eliminate trespass by domestic livestock and motorized vehicles.
  • Replacement/repair of signage and infrastructure.
  • Removal of invasive plants and replanting of native vegetation.
  • Litter/trash clean up and removal.
  • Contribute to environmental assessments and monitoring of the ecological condition of conservation areas.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of volunteer work events on conservation areas, as necessary.
  • Work on specific projects requiring additional support (i.e. wetland enhancement, wildlife tree recruitment and monitoring, access management initiatives, soil collection/analysis, etc.).
  • Represent and promote NTBC and land conservation efforts in a respectful and professional manner.

Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications

  • Education (enrolled or graduate) relevant to the environmental sector is an asset (environmental studies, biology, forestry, ecological restoration, resource management, etc.).
  • Related paid or volunteer experience working outdoors in the environmental field.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn, and comfortable occasionally working alone.
  • Physical fitness to handle an active summer of work on your feet, in variable weather conditions with some heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team-based work environment.
  • Knowledge of British Columbia’s flora and fauna with particular interest in sensitive, threatened, endangered species and ecosystems found within the Kootenay Region.
  • Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous Groups and First Nations, and a wide range of partners and stakeholders is an asset.
  • Willingness to occasionally work remotely for several days at a time, which may include camping.
  • Comfortable with various hand and power tools, operating a pickup truck and off-road vehicles.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License (or equivalent) and willing to submit a Driver’s Abstract.
  • Must be legally allowed to work in Canada.

Work Term, Location and Hours:

  • Work Term: April 28 – November 14, 2025. Potential for contract extension to include summer 2026 term.
  • 36hrs/week, 9-hour days subject to acceptance of averaging agreement (generally Monday-Thursday).
  • The position will be primarily field based, using The Nature Trust of BC’s Cranbrook office, located at the BC Ministry of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship building, as the staging point.
  • This position requires travel throughout the East and West Kootenay, including some overnight travel.

Salary:

  • $23-26 per hour (dependent on experience), plus 4% vacation pay, and overtime pay, as applicable.
