The West Coast Conservation Land Management Program (WCCLMP)1 is seeking enthusiastic and motivated Seasonal Conservation Field Crew members to join our team in Nanaimo.

As a member of the Seasonal Conservation Field Crew, you will be part of a dynamic team responsible for managing conservation lands throughout Vancouver Island. Reporting to the Conservation Field Operations Coordinator, you will be responsible for implementing a variety of operations and maintenance activities as well as assisting in the delivery of habitat enhancing projects that include restoration work, environmental monitoring and wildlife inventory.

This unique position offers the successful candidate the opportunity to work for a program that includes two of the leading land conservation organizations in British Columbia as well as the federal and provincial governments, First Nations, and local stewardship groups. You will have the opportunity to engage with program partners, stakeholders, volunteers and the general public on several different properties from Cowichan Valley to Port Hardy, Tofino and Islands within the Salish Sea. Job Title: Seasonal Conservation Crew Member (1 position available)
Duties: Working under the direction of the Field Operation Supervisors and Coordinator, the Conservation Field Crew will be responsible for:
•Property inspections and maintenance (e.g., trail maintenance, installation of signs, invasive species control, fencing installs/repairs) involving the use of a variety of hand and power tools.
•Collection of spatial data via GPS and other mapping platforms (e.g. Collector App) and entering data into databases as necessary.
•Contribute to wildlife, habitat and vegetation monitoring and inventories (e.g. invasive species inventory, wildlife camera installations, wildlife monitoring and inventory).
•Assisting in the implementation of restoration projects including working with volunteer groups and contractors during restoration activities.
Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
•Must be pursuing or have already obtained a post-secondary education (degree or technical diploma) in Environmental Science / Geography / Resource Management / Biology or related discipline.
•Knowledge and passion for the natural environment (plants, fish, wildlife) in BC.
•Physical fitness to handle extensive field work that may include long hikes/walks over sometimes arduous terrain through inclement weather conditions with heavy lifting/hauling.
•Willingness to travel and occasionally work remotely for several days at a time, including opportunities for backcountry camping.
•Experienced in the use of various building materials and operation of tools and equipment including power tools (e.g., brush saws, hedge trimmers, chain saws, etc.) and construction tools (e.g., drills, drivers, power saws, etc.).
•Experienced in driving trucks through a variety of conditions while safely transporting equipment, large/long loads over long distances and highway conditions.
•Awareness of health and safety issues and a safety conscious attitude.
•Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s license.
•Willingness to undertake training/certification (e.g., first aid certification) and attend workshops/training seminars as required.
•Proof of a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number or, proof of eligibility to work in Canada.
•Proof of full COVID-19 Vaccination status
•Willingness to submit a drivers license abstract and criminal records check.

Job Location: Based out of our Nanaimo office located within the Province of BC’s, Ministry of Forests Lands and Natural Resource Operations building. All employees are expected to start/end workdays at this location. No compensation will be offered for travel to/from this location.
Note: This position requires extensive travel throughout Vancouver Island.

Compensation: Wage of $18.00/hr. + four percent (4%) of earnings as vacation pay every pay period. All travel costs within the program, including over-night stays when necessary, are covered by WCCLMP.

Work Term and Hours:
Anticipated Start Date: Immediate
Anticipated End Date: September 30th with possibility of extension
Hours: 37.5 hrs./per week and 7.5 hrs./per day. Monday – Friday (some exceptions may be required due to project schedules)
