Conserving Sensitive Habitats
The Nature Trust’s long-term management objective is met by entering into long-term lease agreements with the province, Environment Canada on sites adjacent to and included in National Wildlife Areas, and local municipalities for habitat lands located on the edge of urban centres. Our day-to-day work of managing individual sites relies on our land management team located in Nanaimo, Oliver and Cranbrook in collaboration with a network of co-operating partners, the dedicated efforts of provincial staff, the staff of our conservation partners and volunteers from local fish and game associations as well as naturalist clubs throughout the province.

Species Recovery Activities
As a major private property owner in the South Okanagan and Vancouver Island, The Nature Trust is playing a lead role with its conservation partners to protect critical habitat and assist in the implementation of the Species At Risk Act. Active species recovery plans are being implemented on Nature Trust lands for threatened/at risk species.

In the South Okanagan
Habitat enhancement and protection for California Bighorn Sheep, Yellow Breasted Chats, Western Screech Owls, Tiger Salamanders, Western Rattlesnakes, Pallid Bats and White-headed Woodpeckers. Our partners include the Canadian Wildlife Service, the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection, the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund, the South Okanagan-Similkameen Conservation Program, Environment Canada’s Habitat Stewardship Program and the British Columbia Conservation Foundation.

On Vancouver Island
Implementation of the Steelhead Recovery Plan on the Englishman River with our partners including the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the British Columbia Conservation Foundation. At our property on Salt Spring Island and the Cowichan Estuary, we are working with the Garry Oak Recovery Team to protect Garry Oaks and its associated grassland habitat.
