Georgia Basin and the Coastal Estuaries of BC

Although estuaries form less than 3% of the British Columbian coastline, they are used by 80% of the coastal wildlife. With our partners, we have purchased over 1,500 ha (3,705 acres) of threatened land. Critical areas in the Cowichan River, Nanaimo River, Salmon River and Englishman River estuaries have also been purchased and managed by the Pacific Estuary Conservation Program (PECP) partners as well as sections of the Cluxewe Salt Marsh and Lazo Marsh.

Other projects include the purchase of 310 ha (766 acres) of marsh and islands in the Fraser River/Boundary Bay area, the purchase and management of one of the largest intact Garry Oak forests in BC, and the management of rare coastal dune lands on Savary Island.

South Okanagan

The South Okanagan contains some of the most rare and sensitive habitats in the country. It is home to over 20 threatened and endangered species and forms a vital migration route for birds and animals moving from the Great Basin desert in the United States to the interior grasslands of British Columbia.

We have been a champion of conservation in the Okanagan for more than 30 years. Together with our partners, we have been involved in the purchase and management of more than 1,600 ha (4,000 acres). We are actively promoting biodiversity ranching with two cattle operations in the Vaseux and White Lake areas. To further this goal, we have acquired grazing rights to 40,000 ha (100,000 acres) which allows the ranches to be economically viable while protecting streams, grasslands and other endangered areas of this richly diverse region.

East Kootenay
The Nature Trust has been active in the Kootenays for more than 25 years, particularly in the East Kootenay Trench and Elk Valley. We have worked closely with our partners to conserve critical wintering areas for elk and other animals, and wetland areas along the Columbia River that provide habitat for native and migrating birds. With the recent purchase of the Hoodoos property, The Nature Trust with its partners now owns and manages more than 9,000 ha (22,230 acres) of land in the East Kootenay region.

BC Peace River Valley Region
The Nature Trust, with our partners, has secured a number of critical wetlands in the Peace River Valley of British Columbia. The Eared Grebe and Black Tern bird populations have benefited greatly from the conservation of the 248 ha (612 acre) McQueen Slough. As well, conservation of the Fort St. John Potholes, areas of the Boundary Lake wetlands and the Worth Marsh have been achieved with the help of our partners.

Other Areas in BC
The Nature Trust has been active in securing critical habitat throughout the province including in the Skeena River area, the Nechako River, Cold Fish Lake on the Spatsizi Plateau as well as in the Central Interior and West Kootenay. Each acquisition contributes a vital element to conserve wildlife and native plants whether it is a wetland, spawning stream, migration corridor or island.
