Good News for Donors

In the 2006 Federal budget, the Government of Canada announced the removal of capital gains tax on donations of ecologically sensitive lands and publicly listed securities to Canadian charities, effective May 2, 2006.

Donations of Ecologically Sensitive Lands

Under Environment Canada's Ecogift program, Canadian landowners may donate
ecologically sensitive land (or easements and covenants on such land), to approved conservation organizations such as The Nature Trust. To encourage more Canadians to make Ecogifts, the 2006 Federal budget announced that Ecogifts are 100% exempt from capital gains tax.

As part of the Ecogift process, Environment Canada certifies that the land in question is ecologically sensitive, and an expert panel certifies the value of the donation.  For a comprehensive information package and application to the Ecogifts Program visit www.cws-scf.ec.gc.ca  Donations of land that do not qualify as Ecogifts continue to benefit from a 50% exemption from capital gains tax.

Donations of Publicly Listed Securities to Public Charities

Donations of publicly listed securities to charitable organizations receive the charitable donations tax credit. In addition to this, as of May 2, 2006, such donations to public charities will now be 100% exempt from capital gains tax.

Publicly traded securities include stocks, bonds and mutual funds that contain stocks listed on approved stock exchanges. They make excellent gifts to support conservation work at they are liquid and are usually easy to value.

Monetary Gifts
Making a monetary gift is one of the simplest and most effective ways to donate. We accept VISA and MasterCard and cheques (payable to The Nature Trust of BC). All monetary gifts will receive a tax receipt for the value of the gift and a copy of our newsletter, Natural Legacy.

Monetary gifts commemorating life’s milestones such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries or in memoriam gifts are ways to honour people dear to you. When you give this kind of gift, the person or next of kin will be notified.

Monthly or annual planned giving is a very effective way to support The Nature Trust. It allows you to break up your donation into small regular donations with one tax receipt a year. It’s flexible and you can cancel at any time.

There are many different levels of support:

Friend in Conservation with a donation of $100 or more.
Partner in Conservation with a donation of $500 or more.
Ambassador for Conservation with a donation of $1000 or more.
Visionary for Conservation with a future gift such as life insurance, charitable bequests and annuities.

Gifts of Ecologically Sensitive Land
Under Environment Canada's Ecological Gifts Programs, you may make a gift of land to a charity approved by the Federal Minister of the Environment. This gift has as its primary purpose the conservation and protection of Canada's environmental heritage. In order to qualify, the property must be certified as ecologically sensitive. To encourage more Canadians to make Ecogifts, the 2006 Federal budget announced that Ecogifts are 100% exempt from capital gains tax

Gifts of Real Estate
The Nature Trust is pleased to receive gifts of real estate; either undeveloped land or homes. We will work with individual donors to determine the future use of all properties donated. We will also place an attractive bronze plaque on your property recognizing you as a partner of The Nature Trust.

Conservation Covenants
We work with landowners to establish conservation covenants on ecologically significant portions of their lands. Covenants are legally binding agreements that restrict the uses of specific portion of land that are deemed ecologically significant. These voluntary agreements may result in reduced property taxes or other favourable tax considerations by appropriate government authorities.

Enduring Gifts
When you make a future gift to The Nature Trust, you leave a lasting legacy for all of us forever. Planned giving is simply a way of making a gift. Your gift may be immediate or arranged now but not received by The Nature Trust until a future date. By selecting the right type of gift, you can maximize your tax advantage and the estate planning benefits of your donation while helping The Nature Trust continue its vital role in conservation.

If you are considering an enduring gift to The Nature Trust, we recommend that you seek professional legal and financial advice. The Nature Trust is at your service to offer assistance to you and your advisor to enhance the effectiveness of your gift.

Life Insurance
A gift of life insurance, either new or existing, can provide a significant and affordable lifetime contribution to the work of The Nature Trust (as owner and beneficiary). As the donor, you receive a charitable tax receipt for the cash surrender value (if any) and further receipts on payment of subsequent premiums to be paid. This means your future gift may save you tax dollars today. Proceeds of a life insurance gift are immediately payable in cash upon death.

Charitable Bequests
A charitable bequest is a gift to a charity made in the donor’s will. A will is an important legal document which everyone should have yet surprisingly many do not. A gift by will to The Nature Trust is an effective way to support your lifetime interests in land conservation.

We would greatly appreciate being notified of a bequest in your will so that we may thank you appropriately.

Annuities
A charitable gift annuity is an arrangement where a donor pays a lump sum to a charity in return for fixed annual payments—the annuity. As the donor, you will earn a charitable donation tax credit if the amount of the lump sum gift is greater than the market price of the annuity. A portion of the fixed annual payments may be taxable.

Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRT)
A Charitable Remainder Trust or CRT is a planned gift where assets are transferred into an irrevocable trust and you appoint a trustee to manage the assets. Under the terms of the trust you continue to enjoy the income for your lifetime or a specified duration. On termination of the trust, The Nature Trust would receive the remaining assets. You receive an immediate tax credit with a donation receipt issued on the set up of the trust. The donation receipt represents the present value of The Nature Trust’s interest in the trust to be received at a future time.
